The Power of Family Support in Overcoming Substance Use Disorder
6 Oct 2023
Community

Alex and her dad didn’t have the closest relationship when she was growing up. But today in her recovery from substance use disorder (SUD), he’s been an essential support. “He has never excluded me or made me feel like I wasn’t welcome,” she says.

Showing up for our family members with SUD matters. Even small actions can make a big difference. “It’s been a huge part of my recovery. They’re just very supportive. They’ve been there the whole way. And it’s a good feeling.”

With that support, today Alex is making her dreams come true. “I think the one message I would want to share with people is that recovery is possible. If two years ago today, if you told me that I would have the life that I have today with my husband and my cats and, like, a yard and a house and a career, and I'm in school... all the things that I had hoped for but never thought I would have, especially when I was in addiction.”

It all comes back to feeling connection, feeling like she’s a part of something—especially at church. “You go in and it's just like everybody is just loving on everybody. And it's the same faces in church that I see in the meetings, you know, but it's just a different level. I don't know. It's so great.”
